Tim Fowler uses iconic references which are then distorted with strong colours and abstract elements.
Having graduated from University with a Contemporary Fine Art degree, Tim beholds a contemporary paint-style with a mix of urban culture. We discovered Tim’s amazing artwork after a tip-off from our production supervisor. We then visited Tim at his studio to find out more about his work.
Tim creates architectural paintings and portraits using unique combinations of gloss, acrylic, ink, spray paint, marker pens, oil sticks, enamel and graffiti paints within his works.
His magnificent techniques come from a Fauvist style to neatly constructed geometric shapes using broken lines, flat colour, masking tape, palette knife painting, stencilling, mark making and a personal technique… ‘making mistakes’. Fowler is able to perfectly capture the vibes of previous places he’s visited and creates energetic personalities for each individual portrait that he creates – particularly of past 20th century icons such as Judy Garland, Cary Grant and Grace Kelly.
Tim has exhibited his work in many exhibitions across the UK and has become increasingly popular while being represented by many galleries and exhibitions. Last year, Fowler worked on a project titled Observe where he lived in the LCB Depot, Leicester, for one week. But what was his aim?
“I was looking to do something more than just hanging paintings in a gallery. Originally I was just going to do a weekend of live painting, then I thought well I might as well stay overnight. Then if I do a weekend I might as well do a week,” he said. “I nearly called the whole thing off, because I thought I was going to just break down,” he added, in a rare break in working. We’ve had lots of people just walking home on their way from work, and lots of people who aren’t really into art. I’m used to speaking to people about my work but it’s nice to just speak to normal people. People often think you have to be an arty person or have studied art to speak to people about it.”
